Description:

Futebol Friday is a way to offer extra playing and training to our club members through what we believe is Brazil’s greatest secret and developers of talent…Futsal/5v5 and culture.  (Futebol is Brazilian Portuguese for soccer)

Futsal/5v5 is the smallest form of the game that truly represents what soccer is.   Attacking, defending and transitioning but, with goals and goal keepers instead of just small goals.  There is a saying that “There is no where to hide on a futsal court.”  What that is describing is that players are constantly involved and are almost forced to develop whether they like it or not!

In addition to this form of soccer, culture and more specifically ball culture is pervasive in Brazil.  It’s almost impossible to walk the streets or beaches and not see men women and children playing with a soccer ball.  Soccer, futsal, futvolei, altinha, Teqball etc are played everywhere.  This isolated or semi isolated work with the ball is supplementary to their development in a team context and helps the people to develop a love for the ball and an ability to do ridiculous things with it!

So Futebol Friday is about taking what makes Brazil such great developers of talent and putting it together in extra sessions for players in our club.  In these hour long sessions, players will spend 10-15 min doing an isolated technical exercise focused on learning how to control and use the ball and then they will play the rest of the session in 5v5 games with futsal rules.  Teams will be mixed genders and ages to help with creating a “positive discomfort” that forces players to interact and learn in changing environments.  Not only is this good for soccer and human development it also helps to really develop the one club mentality we look to foster.  Players will begin to know and have friends on multiple teams and ages throughout the club, which we know is a great thing for all!

Objectives:

  • Maximize players’ touch on the ball with focus on passing/control, dribbling and shooting.
  • Improve confidence.
  • Challenged to make proper decision on and off the ball.
  • Opportunity for knowledgeable coaches to work with other talented players and vice-versa.
  • Positive players’ social interaction.
  • Establish a sense of belonging to a program.

Program Benefits

Technical skills such as possession of the ball, shooting on goal, passing, controlling the ball, and running with the ball are maximized in the 5v5 soccer format. Thanks to the pressure exerted by opposing players, these skills can all be taught and enhanced.

Player Benefits

  • Small-sided games allow for more touches of the ball and will increase skill.
  • On average, players touch the ball 5 times as much playing 5v5 as they do playing 9v9.
  • Players are involved in three times as many one-on-one situations in 5v5 soccer.
  • On average, in 5v5 soccer, goals are scored every two minutes.
  • Smaller playing areas increase players skills and ability to play under pressure.
  • Small-sided games are played at a quick speed, increasing players speed of play.
  • The format allows players to be creative and free-thinking while playing.
  • It allows players to increase their knowledge of playing the game.
  • Players will have to adapt to playing various positions.
  • FUN environment for all players.
  • All players receive 100% professionally-coached sessions.
  • Players will have the ability to play at a higher level in the fall.

Small Sided Games
Why 5v5?

  •  It empowers the players to make their own decisions.
  •  It develops solid soccer fundamentals (1st touch, trapping, passing, 1 vs. 1 skill and usage of both feet).
  •  It improves their field vision, balance and coordination.
  •  It increases players’ awareness of transition from offense to defense and vice-versa in a small-sided game format.
  • It helps the understanding of positioning (movement on and off the ball).

Coaches and players agree – 5v5 soccer is the best way to develop players.  Using a small field and maximizing player touches, 5v5 teaches players the game of soccer within the game of soccer.

Players leave each 5v5 session with a passion to learn more and play more!
